MARYVILLE, Mo. – While most students spent their summer under the glow of the hot sun, Northwest Missouri State University student Hollie Smith experienced an entirely different glow.
Smith worked as an intern for the KC Running Company (KCRC), a running and walking event management and timing company based put of Leawood, Kan. KCRC holds more than 100 running events throughout the Midwest annually, including the newly-popular Glow Run 5K – hosting nearly 10,000 runners this year in Kansas City, Mo.
“What I got to do as a part of this internship was act as an office assistant,” Hollie Smith, public relations major from Liberty, said. “I answered any customer emails regarding concerns or complaints, processed registrations and manually managed the online organization of registered teams. The office was incredible. It only consisted of 11 people so there was a small, family atmosphere. I absolutely loved every minute of it.”
Hollie traveled locally, hosting promotional events to raise awareness about the Glow Run 5K. These events included in-store giveaways and games as well as a regional outreach program called “Glowbassadors.” Smith claims that without the support of the department and her advisor, she would have never applied for the internship.
“As an intern, I was also in charge of the event’s Twitter page. I had actually done social media for my public relations practicum course that helped prepare me for this experience. In particular, the letter and press release writing skills I learned in public relations techniques were unbelievably helpful.”
